Cover outdoor plants, frost possible Friday morning

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – For anyone who has outdoor plants or vegetable gardens be sure to take time Thursday night to cover them so they can survive in the cold temperatures.

If you have any tropical plants, be sure to bring those inside first because they won’t survive if they’re left in the cold. As for your other plants, be sure to cover them with something that will keep them warm.

Newspapers are one of the best options according to experts, like Pete Kossoudji at the North Dayton Garden Center. Or you can buy canvas plant covers at any local gardening store.

Kossoudji says make sure to avoid using trash bags or plastic as a cover because it won’t offer much protection from the cold.

“You never know how cold it might get,” Kossoudji said. “Fall is starting so that temperature may predict 36 but it may get down to 32. If you don’t have some of your tender plants covered they could get bit hard.”

Come Friday morning, Kossoudji wants to remind people to wait for the frost to melt, before you remove the plant covers. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
