DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Currently, there are more than one thousand registered sex offenders in Montgomery county and hundreds more throughout the Miami Valley.
Finding out where they live, so you can skip those homes is only clicks away.
According to Sgt. Julie Stephens, who supervises Montgomery county’s sex offender registration program, not all offenders are prohibited from passing out candy on Halloween.
“There are some high risk offenders who are on parole or even probation and their probation officer and parole officers have given them instructions that they are not allowed to be involved in Halloween activities,” Sgt. Stephens said.
Those offenders who are according to Sgt. Stephens are told to either leave home Halloween night, or stay-in, and keep the lights off.
“What I’m finding is, a lot of my offenders don’t want to take that risk and they don’t participate anyhow even if they were given that opportunity,” she said.
On Halloween night, she and other officers will be out, making sure.
“We will be working with the adult parole authority on the 31st going out to the high risk offender homes just to ensure that they are following those instructions and they’re not passing out candy and are not involved in any type of Halloween activity,” said Sgt. Stephens.
A tool you can use before heading out to trick or treat is your sheriff’s office sex offender registry online.
Most counties like Montgomery allow you to enter your address, so you can find out if any live within miles of your home.
On Thursday, Matt Haywood and Heather Devlin took the kids to West Carrollton’s Monster Mash.
“It’s safer than going house to house,” Haywood said.
He’ll be out with family trick-or-treating again in a few days but said he’ll be doing a quick online search of the neighborhood first.
“I’ve just never thought about it before, it makes sense, it makes sense to do,” he said.
It’s something parent, Brittany Bowles said she does, every year.
“To keep my kids safe, absolutely,” she said.
Most of the sheriff’s office websites throughout the Miami Valley also let you sign up, for alerts to be notified if a sex offender moves to your neighborhood.
