DPS superintendent: ‘We have to right-size the organization’

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A drop in enrollment and an over-staffed central office is forcing the school board to make ‘tough’ decisions, impacting teachers and support staff across the board.

District officials noticed a significant decline in enrollment at the beginning of this year. They say the drop is because of several reasons, including, the stabbing of a 7-year-old girl at World of Wonder at Residence Park School in Dayton back in May.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, DPS attendance has been dropping over the last decade, going from roughly 16,000 in 2006 to 14,000 in 2010.

Superintendent Rhonda Corr says cuts to the classroom will try to be avoided.

“We can’t continue with the same amount of employees, if we don’t have the children,” Superintendent Rhonda Corr said. “That’s the first part. The second part is, in right-sizing downtown, I will keep the cuts away from the schools to the fullest extent possible.”

Corr wouldn’t give me specifics on what position would be cut or when. A final vote on the cuts will take place at the board’s business meeting on Thursday, November 17th.
