Little league football team raises money for breast cancer awareness

MIAMISBURG, Ohio (WDTN) –  A little league football team is going beyond the field, putting up a fight against breast cancer and raising money to help a special group of women.

At Miamisburg High School, the hard work of one 6th grade football team was put on display Friday night in front of hundreds of people. For the last month, the Viking football has been collecting donations–which normally would go towards the team, instead this month they’re giving all to breast cancer awareness.

For 12-year-old Gage Murphy and his teammates, raising awareness for breast cancer research means more than just wearing a bright color on the field.

“We don’t want to be the people that just go out there and wear pink and just act like it’s okay,” Murphy said. “We want to give to the community and help people out.”

That’s why for the entire month of October, the team created a whole new meaning for scoring a touchdown. Every touchdown scored in their game, meant much more than just putting 6 points on the board.

“When somebody scores a touchdown they’ll waive around this bucket with coins in it,” Murhpy said. “The touchdown bucket and people will donate money to that.”

This year, the team raised more than $600 dollars. At tonight’s Miamisburg football game, they presented the money to the Good Time Charlies cancer fundraiser which benefits cancer patients in Women’s Clinic at the Dayton VA Medical Center.

“Tonight has been awesome,” Good Time Charlie’s Kelli Adkins said. “To have the 6th grade viking bring us a check for $600 to go toward our lady veterans is just funominal to know we have the community involvement like we do.”

The money collected will be added to the Good Time Charlies cancer fund–which is now just $6,000.

“It’s one thing to wear pink socks and gloves, but to actually raise $600 dollars and donate it,” Viking Coach Josh Godsey said. “To the Woman’s VA Clinic, it’s a special thing the kids can always hold on to.”

Right now, the Good Time Charlie’s cancer fund sits at $6,000. Their goal is $10,000. If you’d like to help them reach that goal, you can visit Good Time Charlies in Miamisburg Saturday, November 4, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. for end of the month breast cancer fundraiser.
