SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – A 14-year-old boy is dead and his brother is in custody Tuesday.
The victim, Harley Starling, a Springfield High School student was found dead inside a bedroom at his grandmother’s house — in the 2200 block of Superior Avenue in Springfield.
The two boys lived there with her, according to police.
Police noted that Starling was “cold to the touch” and “was clearly dead and had been for several hours,” according to a report.
The grandmother said she came downstairs around 5:30 a.m. Monday morning to get Starling ready for school when she found him dead.
She said the night before, around 9 p.m. she saw Starling playing with his costume and fake blood the night before. Police say the victim was also watching a movie with his 16-year-old brother.
The grandmother told police that she didn’t hear anything suspicious overnight.
The 16-year-old brother was taken into custody and charged with delinquency counts of murder and tampering with evidence.
“It will be ongoing. We will continue to follow up with witnesses and examination of all the evidence we’ve collected at this point. It’s a definite shame. It’s tragic,” Springfield Police Captain Michael Hill said.
Police are not releasing any details about how the 14-year-old died, but said his death was ruled a homicide.
