TIPP CITY, Ohio (WDTN) – A new FBI statistic shows reported hate crimes against Muslims are surging.
A West Milton Muslim woman says she’s been targeted since Donald Trump’s victory.
“Ever since he came out the rhetoric that we should ban Muslims or have a database for Muslims. I felt like I was being treated unAmerican,” said 26-year-old Kandice Abdul Kader, a West Milton resident.
Kandice says Trump’s election and campaign changed her life. Recently while going to pick up her dry-cleaning in Tipp City she says she was yelled at for her religion.
“I was entering the business and was approached by a man, who was a little older, I would say in his 50’s and he told me I should go back to my own country and I don’t belong here,” she said.
She says she was also targeted on social media.
“A gentleman told me blatently, that Muslims should be put into camps,” said Kader.
She says she ignores the hate because it’s unwarranted. Kader was born and raised in West Milton and currently attends the University of Dayton.
The FBI reports in 2015, anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States rose by 67%. Kader worries it’s going to get worse when Trump officially takes office.
“This is only the beginning. he was just elected and we’re already seeing this hate sprout. It’s really giving people a comfortable enivornment to be so racist,” said Kader.
Kader dresses modern, but worries about other Muslims wearing a hijab or headdress.
“I can’t imagine what that is like. I dress very modern so, to be in public as a Muslim, I can’t imagine the scrutiny they must endure,” she said.
Anti-Jewish hate crimes rose 9%, anti-black hate crimes went up by almost 8%, and anti-LGBT hate crimes increased by nearly 5%, while anti-Latino hate crimes remained steady, according to the FBI report.
