Political peace at Thanksgiving dinner

MASON CITY, IA (KIMT) — There’s a lot that goes into preparing for Thanksgiving, such as cooking, cleaning and preparing for potential controversial conversations.

North Iowa Area Community College history and political science instructor Bennett Smith said the recent election has put a divide in some relationships. He said if you’re in a family where there could be awkward conversations at the Thanksgiving dinner table, remember what the holiday is all about.

“I would just encourage people, lets all be grateful we live in a great country that has been defended by some great veterans, the United States military,” said Smith. “A lot of people we can be grateful and thankful to, and again lets all be respectful.”

Jayne Schiek of Mason City said during Thanksgiving dinner with her family, they make sure everyone enjoys the holiday with a few ground rules. She said everyone’s opinion is respected when they go around the table sharing thoughts.

“We are split. We are some Democrat, some Republican,” said Schiek. “I think all of us are going to be very thankful [on Thanksgiving] the nomination is done.”

Schiek said there is most likely not a way to avoid political talk on the holiday, so it’s important to have an open mind and listen. ” Accept what their view is and hope they do the same for us.”

Isaac Bartz of Mason City said most of his family members have similar political views, but he said if there is a range of political opinions at the dinner table, avoid political discussions altogether.

“Just avoid talking about it completely would be your best choice,” said Bartz.
