JACKSON CENTER, Ohio (WDTN) – An early morning fire in Shelby County killed one woman and sent a man to the hospital.

The call for help came in around 5:00 Thursday morning for a fire in the 16000 block of Pasco-Montra Road in Jackson Center.

Jackson Center Fire Chief Jerry Davis told 2 NEWS one man in his 50’s was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. He was treated and released from Wilson Health Center and is now staying with family.

A woman in her 40’s died in the fire. Her body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed. Her identity is not being released at this time.

Chief Davis told 2 NEWS a rescue squad was returning to the station when the call came in and they were close by. The rescue squad immediately went to the home and when fire crews arrived the man was already in the ambulance being treated.

A neighbor on the scene told 2 NEWS the woman had three dogs and a cat, all of which are believed to have perished in the fire.

Mutual aid from six fire departments responded to the scene to help fight the fire. Davis said when they arrived heavy flame and smoke was coming out of the two-story home.  Firefighters were forced to stay outside battling the blaze.

The woman was still inside the home but firefighters could not reach her.

Davis said, “Jackson Center is a close-knit community. This is not only a tragedy to the family but the community as a whole.”

Fire crews do not know how or where the fire started but they are calling it accidental at this time.  The State Fire Marshal’s Office is on the scene now and the investigation continues.
