Jefferson Township home damaged by fire

A vacant house caught on fire on Germantown Pike in Jefferson Township.

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) — A house in Jefferson Township was damaged by fire late on Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to a call around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday at a house in the 5400 block of Germantown Pike.

When crews arrived, they found fire showing from one side of the house.

Firefighters entered through the front door, knocked down the fire and contained hot spots.

Jefferson Township Fire Chief Larry Sexton says quick work by the crews saved the house from major damage.

“It’s not a lot of damage,” Sexton said. “It’s all confined to one area and some floor, so not severe.”

Sexton says the home was unoccupied and under renovation. No one was injured in the fire.

The cause remains under investigation, but Sexton says an early look indicates the fire may have started around a furnace area, or in the crawl space of the house.

“From what we can see, it most likely started on the floor or under the floor in the crawl space area and burned up into the first floor, or where the window air conditioning unit was,” Sexton said. “It made it’s way knocking the window unit out and burned out through that window there.”

Sexton said it was too early to give an estimate of the financial damage caused by the fire. He says renovations will be able to continue at the property. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
