DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton police are investigating what led to a man being shot to death inside a car on Westdale Court early Tuesday morning.
27-year-old Joshua Verdell is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a murder charge.
Police found Verdell a couple blocks away from the car after it crashed.
He wasn’t shot but was treated at Grandview Hospital.
Tuesday evening, police released new details about what happened inside the car moments before the shooting.
Police are now saying a fight broke out between three men inside the car shortly before the shooting.
One of those men is now dead, the other is in custody.
“Essentially what we have is a verbal altercation that led to a physical altercation. The gentlemen that was sitting in the back of the vehicle discharged a fire arm killing the person who was sitting in the driver’s part of the vehicle,” said Maj. Chris Williams with The Dayton Police Department.
Police are now looking for the third person who was inside the car.
Investigators say that person is just witness to the crime.
They know who they are and are hoping the person reaches out to police to talk soon.
As for the shooting victim, the Montgomery County Coroner’s office confirms 27-year-old Stephan Shyne was killed.
Police say he had an extensive history with the Dayton Police Department.
We asked what led up to the fight, but police would not comment on that at this time.
The suspect, Joshua Verdell, remains in Montgomery County Jail on a murder charge.
