Westerville Police identify two officers killed Saturday

WESTERVILLE, OH (WCMH) — The Westerville Division of Police confirms two officers have been shot and killed Saturday afternoon on Crosswind Drive.

A suspect was wounded and transported to an area hospital, according to Westerville Police.

The scene is still active. The Columbus Division of Police will be handling the investigation.

During a press conference Saturday afternoon police said officers Eric Joering, 39, and Anthony Morelli, 54, responded to a 911 hang-up around 11:30am and were fired on when they arrived at the address.

The city of Westerville is asking for prayers for the officers and their families.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the following statement in response to the news of two Westerville police officers shot and killed in the line of duty today:

“Connie and I are heartbroken by this loss. We are thinking of the officers’ families, their fellow officers and everyone involved, and we are grateful to all Ohio law enforcement who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe,” said Brown.

The Columbus Division of Police, Genoa Township Police, and Ohio Fraternal Order of Police have expressed their condolences on social media.
